Buttercup Wood

Butternut is one of North America’s most beautiful timbers. It is a golden brown member of the walnut family with a cathedral grain pattern that looks like waves breaking on a beach. At one time it was considered “the poor man’s walnut”, butternut is now prized by many.

Creeping buttercup is in the Ranunculus family and known for its lovely flowers. However, buttercup is considered by many to be a weed due to its invasive and prolific nature. Buttercup control is particularly difficult in large scale infestations unless you wish to resort to an herbicide. Oxalis pes-caprae (African wood-sorrel, Bermuda buttercup, Bermuda sorrel, buttercup oxalis, Cape sorrel, English weed, goat's-foot, sourgrass, soursob or soursop; Afrikaans: suring) is a species of tristylous yellow-flowering plant in the wood sorrel family Oxalidaceae. All pictures of wood that appear wet, have been sprayed with denatured alcohol to show the natural color. We use denatured alcohol because it evaporates and does not affect the moisture content.
